Youth Cafe For Cullompton
Cullompton Town Council is looking for volunteers to form a working group with the aim of providing a youth café or similar to give young people somewhere to go in the evenings where they can socialise with their friends and also get information and advice.

A questionnaire, undertaken by Josh Maynard and Manuel Dudczig from St Andrew's Church and completed by 236 Cullompton Community students between the ages of 13-16 showed overwhelming support for this facility to be provided, with the majority preferring a town centre location.  The next step is to form a working group committed to making the project happen.  Cullompton Town Mayor, Mrs Eileen Andrews said that “the town council set up the initial working group due to its concern about the lack of a meeting place for young people in the centre of Cullompton, young people need somewhere to meet with their friends rather than congregate in the street”.

The Working Group will be required to look for suitable premises and consider ways of generating income and obtaining funding.  Anyone interested in being involved in this project, which has the support of the Police, the Culm Valley Youth Service, Cullompton Town Council, St Andrew's Church and the Devon Gateway Development Trust, will be made very welcome at the meeting  Nigel Middlewick, Chairman of the Devon Gateway Development Trust explained that “the Trust is keen to support this project and can provide assistance with grant applications and in aiding the working group.  It is now vital to the success of the project that we get some committed people who are willing to give up a little of their own time to get it off the ground and I would encourage anyone who is interested to come along to the first meeting.  This is one of a number of upcoming opportunities for people to become actively involved in projects that will benefit the town – its success will be entirely down to them”.

Grant for Sports Centre - Cullompton

Local Sports Centre awarded Inclusive grant

The Culm Valley Sports Centre at Cullompton has been awarded a £25,000 grant by the Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI). The IFI which is funded by the Sport England Lottery Fund grant, works with fitness facilities across England to provide inclusive fitness opportunities catering for both disabled and non disabled people.

The scheme concentrates on five main areas:
Inclusive Facilities – ensuring facilities related to fitness are accessible

Inclusive fitness equipment – ensuring that the majority of disabled users are able to access a full body workout

Inclusive training – ensuring staff understand the needs of disabled people and work with an inclusive culture

Inclusive marketing – ensuring sites market effectively and inclusively targeting disabled people. This includes a programme of outreach, and the Inclusive Activator Programme.

Inclusive Sport – The English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) supports IFI sites to develop and deliver a Programme of inclusive sports development.

The total cost of the initiative was £37,000 with 70% of funding provided by the IFI.

The centre has been furnished with 8 new pieces of equipment including the revolutionary Vibrogym, it has also upgraded access issues such as lowered reception desk, inclusive signage, disabled parking etc, and it is launching the scheme on Thursday 19th January, where the award will be presented by Will Behenna who is the IFI Regional Co-ordinator, and there will also be a chance to try some of the equipment.

The day will be attended by regular disabled user Gordon Todd, who has Spina Bifida he says “ Judging by my own experience of 2-3 years of inactivity, I now feel more energetic, alive and feel it is a great achievement. If more disabled people could do exercise, then it would benefit them as well as me!” Other regular users will also attend the day.

ORCHARD LEA

22nd December 2005 PRESS RELEASE

THE FUTURE OF ORCHARD LEA

A representative from Devon County Council will be attending the Town Council meeting on Thursday 5th January to discuss the County Council’s proposals for the future of Orchard Lea Residential Home. The Consultation Document issued by Devon County Council sets out two options:

Option 1: To re-develop the site in partnership with a “third party” care provider and ensure the future provision will meet the standards required.

Option 2: Close the home, sell the site and re-invest the money obtained from the sale in the development of community based services for older people within the locality.

Further details of the proposals can be obtained on the Devon County Council website at www.devon.gov.uk . Responses to the consultation to be received by Devon County Council before 20th January 2005.

The Town Council has written to Devon County Council requesting an extension to the consultation period as it considers that this is too important a decision to be made in the short-time scale allowed, particularly as it co-incides with Christmas and New Year holidays.

Everyone is welcome to come along to the Town Council meeting on 5th January to listen to what Devon County Council has to say about the proposals. This is a very important decision for Cullompton as we could lose a very well managed and essential facility.

Comments on the proposals should be sent to:

Chief Executive, (CCS) Devon County Council, County Hall, EXETER EX2 4QR

by 20th January 2006
