The wartime airbase of Dunkeswell, some eight miles east of Cullompton, has recently opened a memorial museum. The base was home to some 5000 American airman during the latter stages of World War II as well as units of the Royal Air Force. Founder members of the Museum, who met in the early 1980's, shared a common interest in the wartime airfield at Dunkeswell. Most weekends were spent searching the airfield for relics and as the collection grew, displays were organised which created much public interest. In 1995 an official committee was formed, charitable status gained and a building purchased. The motto in honour of those who served at Dunkeswell is:
"MANY RETURNED HOME, SOME STAYED FOREVER, NONE WILL BE FORGOTTEN" Opening Hours | 1 March - 31 October | 10am - 6pm except Tuesdays | | 1 November - end February | 10am - 5pm Saturdays and Sundays only | | Christmas Period | Closed from 18 December to 2 January |
