What is a Tenants Participation Group?

Having been formed about five years ago, the Groups aims have been to act as a forum where Council Tenants, (persons renting 'Social Housing') either in houses, bungalows or flats, are able to get together with elected Councillors and Council paid Officials; in order to air their views and exchange hopes, worries, suggestions and concerns.

Who can Join?

There is no 'membership'; as Council Tenants all they need to do is come along to one of the meetings! Should transport be required, it can be provided, free of charge. Even should a person be unable to attend, they may still write and their views will be put forward in their absence.

How Does the Group Operate?

Group meetings normally take place every six weeks. The venues alternate around the various towns and villages in the area. The 'Cullompton Area' ranges from Thorverton, Silverton and Bradninch to Willand, Uffculme, Culmstock and Hemyock.

What Sort of Matters are Considered?

Such matters as rent increases, (how much and why they are necessary.), what repairs may be needed and how to follow the procedures for getting them done. Complaints against other Tenants, always a difficult problem, are also dealt with as tactfully as circumstances allow. In the most difficult cases a Mediation service may be called upon.

The Central Group

The Central Group comprises of representatives from all the Area Group's throughout Mid Devon. It meets approximately every six weeks, in order to come to a consensus of opinion as to what matters arising from their various groups need bringing to the attention of the Mid Devon District Council's Housing and Health Committee.

Local Area Budget

Mid Devon District Council makes available an annual 'Environmental Budget to improve and enhance estates. The priorities are determined by Tenants who attend the area group meetings. Since its inception the Cullompton Group has been responsible for providing the following:

  1. new street signs at Highland Terrace Uffculme;
  2. additional lighting at Heggadon Close Bradninch;
  3. improved Street lighting at Bowley Meadow Bradninch;
  4. resurfacing a footpath at Vickary Close Cullompton.

The Housing Views Newsletter

Every few months the 'Housing Views' is published by Mid Devon District Council. This is a Tenants Newsletter. It keeps Tenants informed about all that is going on within the Mid Devon District Council's housing areas. Recent articles include reports from area groups, features on local towns and letters from Tenants.
