Notes on the Trip to Ploudalmezeau Frid 30th April - Mon 3rd May

After the overnight crossing from Plymouth we arrived at Roscoff at 08.00 on Sat 1st May. We were taken by coach to Ploudalmezeau to meet our host families. In the afternoon we spent some time in the seaside village of Portsall ending with a traditional Breton tea party, home made cakes, biscuits, etc! In the evening we enjoyed a supper of savoury and sweet crepes which were enjoyed by all. Some of our group were even given the opportunity to try their hand at making crepes which was fun. The evening ended with Breton dancing after which we all went wearily to bed, it had been a long day! On Sunday were taken on a guided tour of a fishing village, no longer in use, but now a heritage site. We then had a picnic lunch in a local village hall before heading back to Ploudalmezeau to prepare for the evening. We were entertained to a concert of Breton singing and music provided by choirs and groups of musicians from Ploudalmezeau. After aperitifs, the evening ended with a lovely dinner hosted by the Deputy Lady Mayoress. On this trip we were joined for the first time by a team of young Cullompton rugby players who played in a tournament against their French counterparts. They had a great time, the more so because they came away with a trophy, their first international win! Hopefully this will be the start of new connections between our two towns. We left Ploudalmezeau on Monday taking the afternoon ferry to Plymouth. We arrived home very tired but happy at around 22.00.

VISIT BY OUR FRIENDS FROM PLOUDALMEZEAU - Thursday 21st - Sunday 24th May 2009

Our 50 visitors arrived safely in Cullompton around 15.45 and were met by their host families in the Bull Ring. This first evening was spent relaxing "en famille" as our friends had had a very early start from Ploudalmezeau - around 04.30 in most cases! Needless to say most people got an early night to recharge their batteries for the next day.

On Friday we left Cullompton at around 10.00am for our trip to Clovelly. We stopped along the way at Atlantic Village for a coffee and in some cases, some retail therapy! On arrival in Clovelly, we had a picnic lunch in the Village Hall, with each host family providing the goodies for their guests. The weather was perfect and we spent a very pleasant hour or so in the village. Although we all made it down safely over the steep cobbled lane, quite a few took advantage of the Landrover service for the return to the top. The evening festivities took place in Cullompton Rugby Club, where we were pleased to welcome Cullompton Town Mayor, Mike Thompson to join us. We enjoyed an excellent meal of Brixham Mackerel Pate, Beef Stew & Dumplings with seasonal vegetables, Raspberry Mousse & Shortbread, Cheese & Biscuits. Speeches and gifts were exchanged during an interval. While we recovered from the feast, we enjoyed singing Breton and English songs for a while. Then we were treated to a demonstration of Caledonian Dancing, after which everyone was encouraged to have a go. After some good instruction, most people quickly got the hang of it and participated with great gusto. A great evening ended at around 12.30.

On Saturday morning, the French and English committees met to discuss the weekend and general topics about the Twinning Association, after which we all attended a Reception in the Town Hall, provided by our Mayor, Mike Thompson and his Town Council team. They provided an excellent luncheon enjoyed by all. Gifts and speeches were exchanged, and there is no doubt that the Entente Cordiale is alive and kicking between Ploudalmezeau and Cullompton.

Saturday afternoon and evening were free time with guest and hosts, before the early departure from Cullompton at 06.00am on Sunday morning. Everyone agreed that it has been a most successful visit, the only criticism was that it was too short!! We were blessed with perfect weather for the whole time, and Devon appeared at its very best throughout.
