What Is It?

The Devon Gateway Development Trust is a partnership organisation established to benefit the local community. Any member of the local community over the age of 18 and on the electoral role may join the Trust and have a voice in how it is run.

What Will It Do?

The primary role of the Trust will be to obtain funding and provide support and advice to volunteers working for the benefit of the community. The Trust will work alongside existing voluntary community organisations and enthusiastically support them in achieving their objectives. It will also help establish and support groups emerging to implement fresh projects to satisfy community needs. This will include the coordination and implementation of the Culm Valley Community Regeneration Plan.

What are the Benefits of Membership?

As a member of the Trust you will:

  • use your skills, knowledge and experience for the benefit of your community
  • meet and work with like–minded movers and shakers
  • assist the community gain access to funding
  • support the regeneration of the area
  • have a say in the community’s future
  • have the opportunity to work as a member of a project team
  • influence the choice of regeneration projects supported

What is the Community?

The community is all those people living and working in the Culm Valley.

What are Community Organisations?

The term community organisations describes all those groups whose activities are of benefit to members of the community eg sports, social and activity clubs, resident associations, welfare, youth and children’s groups, charities and other trusts etc.

What is the Legal Position of the Trust?

The Trust is a Company Limited by Guarantee and as such is a separate legal entity. Instead of shareholders it has members who offer a nominal £1 as their limit of liability. It is regulated by the Company Acts and has a Board of Directors who will be elected by its members. Six of those Directors are required to be employed in the business or voluntary sector, the remaining six to be representatives of the other sectors of the community.

How is the Trust Funded?

A primary role of the Trust is to gain access to funds for the community which would not be easily accessed if the Trust were not in existence. The Trust will raise funds by seeking grants from awarding bodies, charities, local government, local and national businesses, by special fund raising activities and from trading. A further advantage of the Trust is that it may be used as a means of ensuring that any new building or land development within the area it serves contributes funds to regeneration and social issues.

Can the Trust Own Property?

The Trust will obtain property for community ownership. It may manage property on behalf of the community.

Is the Trust a Registered Charity?

The Trust is not yet a registered charity although it is working towards registered charity status. It is up to the members to decide when to apply for that status.

What Happens to Profits from any Trading Activities?

The Trust is a non–profit making organisation. Surpluses from any trading activities must be spent or invested for the benefit of the community.

Is there a Trust Logo?

The Trust logo has not yet been designed. It is proposed to invite schools to participate in a competition to design a suitable logo after the Annual General Meeting. Members of the Trust will select a logo from those submitted in the competition.

How is the Trust Managed?

The Trust will be managed by a Board of Directors elected by the members at the Annual General Meeting. Each year one third of the Board will retire by rotation and new directors will be appointed.

How do I become a Member?

You may become a member if you are on the local electoral role by completing the application proforma and paying the initial annual subscription of £3.
